Cargo ship Volochaevsk moored in Bristol

Photo of the cargo vessel Volochaevsk (IMO 5383392) moored in the harbour of Bristol, England in 1967.
The 1923 tons Volochaevsk was built as German registered Weserwald by Deutsche Werft, Finkenwarder, Germany. The Weserwald changed name in 1945 to Empire Galveston and in 1946 to Volochaevsk. She was scrapped in the USSR in 1973.

For me it seems very doubtful, that this ship is built at 1945 or before. Looks more to be built in the fifties. The construction of the funnel also is not a German type, but looks typical Russian. Also the front of the bridge.

There was for sure not a ship named "Weserwald"! "Weser" means the river Weser and "-wald" means forest. There is a mountainous area in Germany named Westerwald. Maybe the German navy uses or had used "Westerwald" to name auxiliary vessels.

Hi Juergen,
Feel free to correct me, my source of info was Wikipedia (page on list of Empire Ships). I quote:
Empire Galveston
Empire Galveston was a 1,925 GRT cargo ship which was built by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg. Launched in 1944 as Weserwald for Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen. Seized in May 1945 at Flensburg. To MoWT and renamed Empire Galveston. Allocated in 1946 to USSR and renamed Volochayevsk. Scrapped in 1973 in USSR.

If you have other info, please do share.
Best regards,

All sources including Lloyds Register show her as being built as 'Weserwald'
