The cruise ship Marco Polo was built as Russia registered Aleksandr Pushkin in 1965 by Mathias-Thesen, Wismar, Germany. She measures a loa of 176.1m, beam 23.5m and 19,680 Tons. The Aleksandr Pushkin change name to Marco Polo in 1991.

The ship was owned by the (new) Orient Lines formed by Gerry Herrod. She was completely refitted in Greece,sailed with workman aboard to Mombasa,having had to cancel her Maiden Cruise, and her "Naming" Ceremony took place there.
