'Rajula' loading from lighters at Nagapattinam
Cargo lighters alongside British India S.N. Co's passenger/cargo ship "Rajula" at Nagapattinam, southeast India, in June 1968. For ship's details see picture #22869
. "Rajula" would anchor in open sea some distance off this town en route from Madras to the Malacca Straits; passengers & cargo were brought out by boat. One of the main exports from Nagapattinam was purple-skinned onions, which could produce a nasty gas in confined spaces, so on opening the holds at Penang live chicken were used as gas detectors.
