HMS Unicorn

Sister ship to the fully restored Royal Navy Leda Class Frigate HMS Trincamalee at Hartlepool. Built to late for front line action therefore never has it's masts and spars fitted and used as a cadet training hulk. At the moment she can still be seen at Dundee Waterfront.

Built in the Royal Dockyard at Chatham, Kent and launched into the River Medway on 30 March 1824 as a 46-gun frigate for the Royal Navy. She had taken 2 years and almost a thousand oak trees to build. The hull is 150 feet long.
After launching she was not rigged, but "housed fore and aft" and went straight into reserve, thus never was called into action.
From 1957 to 1882, Unicorn was lent to the War Department, to be used as a powder hulk at Woolwich, and was then laid up at Sheerness. In 1873, she was refitted in order to replace HMS Brilliant as the Reserve Drill Ship in Dundee. She spent 89 years in Earl Grey Dock, and was moved from there with great difficulty from the mud that had accumulated, down river on 12/13 November 1962, first to a temporary berth in Camperdown Dock, and a year later into Victoria Dock.
The whole story of this historic ship can be seen on the frigateunicorn web site.
