HMCS Fraser DDE 233 at Singapore 1964

HMCS Fraser at HM Dockyard, Singapore 1964. Fraser lies alongside the right side of the basin opposite HMS Manxman and two Australian frigates. The photo is taken from the left side of the basin which is in fact the KG6 Drydock. or more correctly was the King George Sixth Drydock. See picture #1740 and picture #1735 for more details.

I was there too. I remember the divers were busy and the weaponsmen were dropping stun grenades over the side as there was some sort of insurrection going on. The drive into Singapore was lined with British troops in full battle gear etc. I was a vittling storesman ABVS1. I remember Bill Tweet well and LS Finley too. I still am in touch with Doug McDonald. I issued many a tot to the men in the 2 1/2 years I served on her. What a trip that was though. I saw that there was a movie done by the ship photog that was in NFB archives for years but is now gone. It was called "Landfall Asia" by Gordon Sperling. He also took all the pictures of our crossing the line ceremony.What a great crew we had to sail with.

Further to my previous post: I was lucky to get aboard Fraser when passing through Bridgewater N.S. in the fall of 06. She was refitted to be DDH 233 some time ago and is currently tied up in the Le Havre River there. She was supposed to be tiddlied up and turned into a museum/hostel of sorts, but it may not happen. The DND is apparently taking her back. She may be scrapped, sunk as an artificial reef like sister ship Saguenay, or go through some sort of maintainace to save her. Even though she was changed radically when converted to Heli-carrier, and to accommodate women sailors, I still recognized "Burma Road", 2mess ( once the supply ratings mess - now womens' quarters) and the galley and officers flats etc. The whole after section of the ship was changed from what we see in the picture. There was a newspaper picture in a frame in the Capt.'s cabin, of Capt. Hayes ( commander 2nd DE Squadron W. Coast) with the Sultan of Selanger , taken when the Sultan visited the ship on that cruise. Our "old man" was commander Thurber. He was from the flying wing of the navy and had never crossed the equator either, so had to be initated as a "trusty shellback" too. I believe we left Singapore and headed into the Straits of Mallaca for Jetex 64 and that is when we crossed the equator.

Ken: I seem to recall that an engineering type had a fatal accident while ashore in Singapore. Do you remember; was it a Fraser stoker, or was he from one of the other ships?

The incident you are talking about was the sailor that fell into deep storm drain and broke his neck. If I remember right he is buried in Singapore, His wife got here but was not allowed into the country because she had not had immunization shots.

Lots of good memories here! Recall all these incidents, fellow who died was not a Fraser, one of other ships.I recall meeting the Gurkas onboard who were fighting the Communist uprising in the Malay Penninsula at the time, one fellow hairy had his his finger cut when asked to see the soldiers famous knife, they never draw it unless they draw blood! Hi Ken:
My good friend Brian Eccles ( retired chief sonarman ) in Lower Sackville has informed me that Fraser is going to the scrap heap soon. He is going to try to get down to Bridgewater and try to get aboard to rescue some of the memorabilia that I left there a couple of years ago. He thinks that the Cornwallis museum might be interested in having it. Better than it going to the dump. If any other ex-Frasers have done the same and want their stuff back, I'd advise them to shake a leg. I'm really disappointed in this turn of events. I know that the Reef Society spent a lot of time and money to achieve something, but I guess politics got in the way.

I too was on her from 62-65 and recall that there was an incident where we were firing mortars for a ficticis U Boat and the dummy mortar nearly landed on the deck of an American Destroyer. The crew of the Fraser was incredible and fun was an every day adventure.

On September 19, 2010 HMCS Fraser was towed into Port Maitland, Ontario, to be scrapped. By March 2011 Fraser ceased to exist. A sad end to a great ship and so many great memories.

I was on HMCS Fraser from the fall of 1963 through 1965. Seems to me we accompanied HMCS St.Laurent as far as the Nicobar Islands on her round the world trip to the east coast for conversion to DDH. I remember Singapore and Port Swettenham, also Penang in Malaysia, and our crossing the line. Huge jellyfish where we anchored at Penang. I was an OSFC at that time. An interesting experience to be sure! I moved to Nova Scotia in 1990 and often drove past the Fraser where she sat looking neglected for a number of years before being scrapped.

Hi Frank, sorry I can't recall you. I finished basic training in Nov 63 and joined Fraser just before the trip. Fraser, Makenziie and St Laurent. It is strange to me that your name escapes me. We were probably in the " od's" mess. L/S King was our den mother. Bill Tweet, Colin Armstrong, Dale Roth, Lyle Weatherby, Les Robstad and many more. I was an RP so we shared the same watch space. Wonderful cruise. Sadly one of our shipmates was Brother of the lad who fell in the monsoon ditch. Also sadly, I got out before unification, thank goodness. I still have my all my Crowsnest Magazines as well as our " Crossing the Line" ship's list.

Hi Frank, I joined Fraser the morning it left harbour for JetEx 64. I was an RP in the "OD's mess, leading seaman King as our den mother. I think the brother of the lad who died on board as well. The other two ships were the Mackenzie who lost her sonar dome off Cape Flattery and St Laurent. Great first experience for a young fellow from the prairies. I still have one photos from our "Crossing the Line" ceremony as well as list of all on board. Ian still in contact with Colin Armstrong who lives in NZ. Send an email if you are interested.
