DISCOVERY BAY

OCL container ship at Govan Shipbuilders' yard in Glasgow in 1981 to undergo conversion from steam to diesel.
She was built by Deutsch Werft in Hamburg in 1969.
In 1988, sold she was renamed DIRECT KEA and scrapped in 1999 at Alang.

I worked on this refit as a fitter, came off after
asbestos [blue] was found. Some workers returned after voting for 50 pence allowance per hour.

I worked for OCL as a second Engineer when this photo was taken and did the whole six months refit from Steam to Diesel, then I did the Maiden voyage to the Gulf and back.
I have great memories of my time in Govan and Glasgow but did not know about the Blue asbestos!!
The Discovery Bay was my favourite OCL vessel both as a steam ship and motor vessel and was so rapt to find this picture of it on the Net.
