David,

would this be the Canadian destroyer HMCS Nipigon (DDH266), built 1961 - decommissioned 1998?

Added by Marcel Gommers on 08 November 2009.
Hi Marcel!
HMCS Nipigon was decommissioned from the Canadian Forces on 2 July 1998 and sold for use as an artificial reef. She was sunk in the St. Lawrence River north of Rimouski, Quebec on 22 July 2003.
Hence the answer must be no!

Added by Peter Langsdale on 08 November 2009.
Hi Peter,
I don't understand... the photo was taken in 1991, so before decommissioning?

Added by Marcel Gommers on 08 November 2009.
Marcel, my point is that she cannot have served with the Japanese!

Added by Peter Langsdale on 08 November 2009.
Same point I was trying to make by identifying her as a Canadian vessel (which I think it is) rather than Japanese. Look closely at the flags....

Added by Marcel Gommers on 08 November 2009.
There is also a nice picture of her on the DDH266 page on wikipedia, looks to me like the same vessel as above. Besides, a Japanese vessel in the UK? Not impossible, but maybe improbable?

Added by Marcel Gommers on 08 November 2009.
I would say that is definitely a Canadian flag on the stern, so mention of Japan is I think a red herring!

Added by Peter Langsdale on 08 November 2009.
NIPIGON was indeed a Canadian ship completed in 1961. She was decommissioned in 1998 and sunk as a reef in the early 2000s

Please correct this, this is an insult to the RCN and Canada.T.Y. Ken

Added by Ken Watson on 21 January 2011.
Corrected as requested, by exception as I am not sure why you would take it as an insult. In particular if you follow the history of the comments that show that it was incorrectly identified by the contributor.
No-one ever meant to insult anyone so perhaps a bit over-sensitive?
